The new indoor training hall at the Meanwood Sports Centre opened on 1 July and logged 1,200 visits in its first week alone.

Local clubs had waited three years for the upgrade after the old hall on Meanwood Road failed safety checks in 2023. The timing matters because Leeds City Council released the final tranche of its 2025-26 sports capital budget in March, unlocking work that had stalled. Without the new space, several junior teams faced losing their winter slots.

Two venues driving the change

In Beeston, the South Leeds Sports Hub on Dewsbury Road added floodlit 3G pitches last month. The hub now hosts evening sessions for the Beeston Athletic Club and the nearby St Luke’s Youth Project. Across town in Chapel Allerton, the old tennis courts on Harrogate Road were resurfaced in May with funding from Sport England’s small-grants scheme. Both sites sit within two miles of major bus routes, cutting travel time for families who previously drove to Headingley.

Membership numbers at clubs using the two venues rose 28 per cent between January and June 2026, according to figures released by Leeds Active, the council’s leisure arm. Average weekly attendance at the Beeston hub reached 850 users, while Chapel Allerton courts recorded 410 bookings in the same period. The council’s own monitoring shows 62 per cent of users live within a 15-minute walk of either site.

Next steps for residents

Interested clubs can apply for block bookings through the Leeds Active website or by calling the Meanwood centre on 0113 378 5000. The next open day at the Beeston hub is scheduled for 20 July, with free taster sessions for under-16s. Spaces remain available on weekday evenings at both locations.
