More than 180 people signed up for the first round of free journaling workshops run by Leeds City Council’s wellness team this spring.
The interest reflects wider pressure on mental health services across West Yorkshire, where waiting lists for counselling stretch beyond six months. Journaling offers a low-cost entry point that fits around work and family schedules in a city where many residents already walk or cycle to appointments.
Participants meet weekly at the Leeds Central Library on Calverley Street and at the Meanwood Valley Urban Farm community room on Meanwood Road. Both venues provide notebooks and quiet corners away from the city centre traffic.
A 2025 Leeds Beckett University study of 320 local adults found that those who wrote for ten minutes each morning reported a 27 percent drop in self-rated anxiety scores after four weeks. The same research priced a basic guided journal at £8.50 from independent shops on North Street.
Start with a single A5 notebook and a pen kept by the kettle in the kitchen. Set a timer for five minutes before the morning commute from Headingley or Beeston. Write whatever surfaces, without correcting spelling or aiming for complete sentences. The goal is presence on the page rather than polished prose.
After the first week, add a second short session in the evening at a café table on Kirkgate Market. Note three things noticed during the day, such as the sound of trams on Boar Lane or the smell of bread from a nearby bakery. This anchors attention in the immediate surroundings rather than in future worries.
Local groups meet on Tuesday evenings at the Tetley arts centre on Hunslet Road. A £5 donation covers tea and a prompt sheet. No experience is required, and newcomers receive a simple template with three sentence starters.
Review the notebook once every Sunday at a bench in Roundhay Park. Circle any repeated themes and decide whether to continue alone or join the next library cohort. Those who want further structure can book a six-week course through the Leeds Mindfulness Network for £45, which includes a follow-up session at the same Calverley Street location.
Consistency matters more than volume. Ten minutes most days produces clearer results than an hour once a week, according to the same Leeds Beckett data.
