Leeds City Council has expanded its free senior fitness programs with weekly group sessions now running at two established sites in the city. The initiative targets adults over 60 and includes chair-based exercises, gentle walks and strength work without any charge to participants.
Leeds reports one of the highest rates of active older adults among major UK cities, yet local health data shows persistent gaps in participation among those living alone or on fixed incomes. Council officers say the free format removes cost barriers that previously kept many residents from joining paid gym classes or private clubs. Sessions coincide with longer daylight hours and milder weather that make outdoor activity more practical through July and August.
Classes meet every Tuesday at 10am on the grass near the playground in Roundhay Park and every Thursday at 11am inside the main hall of the Meanwood Road Leisure Centre. Both locations offer step-free access and nearby bus stops served by routes 1, 7 and 12. A third set of sessions begins next month at the Holbeck Community Centre on Elland Road for residents in south Leeds.
Active Leeds, the council’s sport and physical activity team, runs the programs in partnership with the NHS Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group. Last year more than 480 people aged 60-plus attended at least one session, according to council figures released in May 2026. Average attendance per class sits at 22 participants, up from 14 the previous summer.
Anyone aged 60 or over can join without booking in advance, though spaces are limited to 30 per class. Participants need only wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Full timetables and any weather-related changes appear on the Leeds City Council website under the Active Leeds section or by calling 0113 378 7000. Those with specific mobility questions are advised to speak with their GP before starting.
